Quiet Summer tells the tales of three men, who came to Taiwan from Japan, China, and Philippines. The main character Shuji comes to Taiwan to find the place for the ashes of his mother. His travel is the search for his identity with the hope for the re-connection between his mother and father, and at the same time, quietly represents the lives and stories of a middle-aged Filipino worker, who ends up as a run-away laborer, and an old Chinese teacher, who lives alone in a poor and single Chinese veteran community, in which all the residents were relocated from China to Taiwan during the Civil War in 1949. Ironically, the Filipino laborer, the Chinese teacher who might have fought against Japan, and a young hybrid between Japanese and Taiwanese, all of whom have different backgrounds, are connected to each other in this film as many people with diverse backgrounds are connected in the Taiwanese society.

Yukihiko Kageyama plays a role of Shuji, a sensitive young man grew up in a divorced family. Chang Fong, who is a legendary actor in Taiwanese cinema and born in Manchuria under the Japanese reign, shares the similar background with the role of the Chinese teacher. Filipino laborer Renato Oytas, who suffered from the insecure life as an laborer in Taiwan, acted himself in the factory he was working for. Quiet Summer is a narrative film but strongly reflects the personal experiences and backgrounds of the director and actors in the society of Taiwan.

Quiet Summer is a feature-length personal narrative/documentary film independently made by Shuhei Fujita, who spent four years to complete this film in Taiwan. He came to Taiwan to involve himself into documentary production as a researcher and cinematographer. While he visited a lot of local families and stayed in the old district of Taipei, he discovered unknown history between Taiwan and Japan and also had taken care of the Filipino laborers in the city of Taipei. He decided to make a film based on his own experiences and the real stories of the people he met.
